FAQ
Q.
Why is Senders Research involved in clinical research studies?A. Medical research has reduced or eliminated countless, life-threatening illnesses so that more and more children live healthier lives. That is why the Senders Research philosophy has always been to improve the health of children by encouraging participation in clinical research studies.
Q.
Why should my child participate in a clinical research study?A. To begin with, each one of our studies has the potential to directly benefit your child by exposing him or her to cutting edge medicines or vaccines. Secondly, each one of our studies deals with a problem that will impact on society as a whole. As such, the participation of your individual child has the potential to improve the health of many children on both national and international levels.
Q.
How does Senders Research choose the studies in which it participates?A. Each study must potentially benefit the participating child as well as society as a whole. And each research study must offer minimal risk to your child!
Q.
Are these research studies really safe?A. Before your child is enrolled in a research study, we will go over the IRB or ethics board approved consent form in detail. We will review the potential benefits as well as the known and suspected risks. To be sure, any medicine or vaccine has the potential to cause an allergic reaction in any patient. But we carefully screen each study and eliminate those with the most serious side effects. Because we are charged with safeguarding your child, we will never knowingly expose him or her to a side effect that has not been discussed with you in detail.
Q.
What are my responsibilities when I sign up for a study?A. Each study is different. We will discuss the responsibilities with you prior to the time that you sign the consent form. Most vaccine studies require you to spend 15-30 extra minutes in the office following the vaccination. This is for your child’s protection since most allergic reactions occur during that time frame. You will also be asked to complete a paper or electronic diary card that looks at temperature and what are called adverse side effects (fever, local pain, swelling, muscle aches etc). Most importantly, you will be asked to return to the office at specified times so that your child can be examined or, if it is a blood drawing study, for the blood to be drawn and processed.
Q.
Can I withdraw from a study?A. Absolutely. You have the right to withdraw from a study at any time without penalty.
