Parenting in the Trenches

If parents were given a list of what could go wrong once one has children, similar to the warnings on various drug labels, one has to wonder if the human race would die out. The enormity of the job is only outshined by the enormity of love and passion children are able to evoke in us.

Yet there are times when, love them as we do, their existence on this planet may be hanging by a thread. Haven’t we all, at some weak, exasperated moment had the thought that this is not what we had in mind when we decided to procreate! During those times there is help. Parenting in the Trenches offers a series of classes designed to tackle the messy, sometimes confusing, parts of parenting.

Only 385 of high school students always wore seat belts as both drivers and passengers in a study of over 12,000 children 16-19 years. With over 5,000 deaths and 400,000 accidents a year in this age group, traffic accidents are the most preventable cause of death in children. Strong racial and sexual difference were noted with 67% of female drivers and 52% of males buckling up while 60% of white and Hispanic drivers and 47% of African Americans. Similar trends were found in school grades with 71% of A students and only 44% of C, D and F students wearing seat belts.

My irritation "button" is most easily pushed when my child:

A. ignores me when I’m telling him/her what to do.
B. whines and complains.
C. fights with a sibling.
D. talks back or acts rude.
E. some other behavior not listed.
