Parent Coaching
Parent Coaching provides individuals or couples the opportunity to look at challenging family situations in a safe and supportive space. New perspectives, added skills, and fresh encouragement can turn frustration and negative reactions into proactive opportunities that allow you to teach your children a better way to respond to conflict.
Coaching also supports parents in getting on the same page in order to set forth a more cohesive family foundation. When couples are able to support each other in their parenting, all aspects of the family environment are strengthened.
Techniques used in the coaching process are based on current brain research within a child development framework. They have been specifically designed to effect changes in the lives of adults first. How we perceive a situation shapes the actions we take. When we are confident in our own path we are better able to guide children in their emotional growth. The skills gained through coaching become the building blocks for a more cooperative and peaceful family life but their positive effects spill over to all aspects of adult interactions.
What Happens in a Parent Coaching Session? We believe that parents have all the wisdom needed to raise the children they have been given. It is not wisdom that we lack. In fact, it is our wisdom that prompts us to look for better tools as we parent. Tools are a different matter. We acquire tools throughout our lives and some serve us for a time; some are out of date at the onset of our parenting, and some are yet to be discovered. Parent coaching helps parents sort out their tools and tailor their resources to their family’s needs and values.
The first thing the coach does in an initial coaching session is to learn a bit about the children. Parents provide a description of each child so that we can see how personality traits play a role in parenting choices.
Then we look at the issues that feel frustrating and repetitive. What leads up to moment of breakdown? What strategies are currently used? What is the outcome? Asking questions opens us to new possibilities. When we are able to look at situations from a number of different angles, we are more likely to discover new opportunities. We can now add new tools. By tailoring strategies that are based on current brain research and tested as best practice, parents are provided a wide range of supportive resource.
We believe that continuing with the same approaches leads to the same results. If the results don’t match your expectations or your values, it is time for new tools. Parent coaching provides a direct route to that change.
What Parent Coaching Is Not!Parent Coaching is not “therapy” and is not designed to replace or conflict with services provided by psychologists or social workers. In fact, some of our most consistent referrals come from the world of pediatric psychiatry, psychology and social work.
What is the Time Commitment?Coaching sessions are for 50 minutes and are scheduled on the hour. We have found that 3 sessions form the foundation for a successful coaching experience and so, 3 sessions are sold as a package. Following the initial three sessions, additional packages may be purchased. Coaching sessions need not be completed all at once. In fact, it is often ideal to space out sessions to gain real world experiences with the skills and concepts discussed.
