About Us
Pediatricians understand that a child’s health goes beyond flu shots and check-ups to include family dynamics, peer interactions, and a healthy sense of self. Health care includes the experiences we have with others. The well being of a child, therefore, relies heavily on the support adults provide. It’s been said “It takes a village to raise a child.” The village is raising the child and the health of that village will impact the outcome. So in 2005, Senders Pediatrics decided to extend its care of children to include care for the caregiver. Enter Senders Parenting Center. This arm of Senders Pediatrics offers support and encouragement to adults by providing classes and coaching, as well as forums that welcome creative problem solving.
When we first enter parenting, or teaching, our perspective may not include the full complexity that lies ahead of us. Our initial approach may resemble the energy of a sprinter when we actually need the endurance of a marathon runner.
Although our circumstances may vary, it is important to have the support and care that we need. Perhaps we start off assuming that we should be able to “go it alone”, however, like the marathon runner, receiving or not receiving support may result in the difference between staying in the race, or collapsing.
Being in the presence of others who are experiencing the same challenges opens up ways to personalize strategies and discover that you’re not alone. From infant care to managing the grandkids, finding the tools to meet the needs of children in today’s culture requires our willingness to grow as adults. Upon discovered an old LP record, a son commented to his dad, “Wow, CD’s sure were big when you were a kid.” We are in an ever evolving world. We’ve gone from LP’s to CD’s to ipods. The equipment used to play an LP just won’t work with the CD. Likewise the parenting and teaching tools used in past generations won’t completely meet the needs of children born into this continually shifting time. Our tools must be up for the task.
We are in this together and for the most important reason of all – our children. The role of an adult in a child’s life is monumental. Surely, such a worthy undertaking deserves support along the way.
